Biomarkers on distant worlds

“I think that we will see the discovery of a biomarker in the atmosphere of another planet. In astronomy, a biomarker is a compound that indicates life could be present. Some possibilities are molecular oxygen, the “red edge” of chlorophyll reflectance (chlorophyll is strongly reflective of light that is slightly redder than humans can see), and complex organic molecules. Astronomers are already talking about using the James Webb Space Telescope, which is scheduled for launch in October 2018, to search for such biological indicators.” — Sally Dodson-Robinson, astronomer. ..from an interview with astronomers on the future of the field in the latest issue of Astronomy Magazine.
